A7/1415 Union Terrace Gardens – Public Centre for Contemporary Arts
I would like to give my support to the planning application for a new public Centre for Contemporary Art in Union Terrace Gardens.
Why is it that a City that boasts to be the Energy capital of Europe and provides cutting edge technology in the oil & gas sector has to be the city with the wooden spoon for Scottish Art? This is a time when we should embrace change and do something culturally for the city. Donald Trump will be given the green light to build his fabulous golf course and 500 million pound mansions on a bird sanctuary; but what I hear are objections from a small group of individuals trying to stop this wonderful city with a Contemporary Art Centre it can be proud of.
The area where the art centre planned it tucked away and will not ruin Union Terrace Gardens but actually enhance it. I know for a fact that the proposed site is used by homeless people to sleep, and by ruffians causing trouble. The plans look excellent and I have been advised that the new Centre will not only reclaim the Gardens for us law abiding citizens (who at present feel it is unsafe to visit) but help bring back some of community spirit the city centre desperately needs with the on-going anti–social behavioural problems.
I am sympathetic to those who are upset that a few trees will be lost to this fine building being erected, and as an animal and nature lover this was a concern. However I have been advised that there comprehensive replanting and regeneration scheme will actually improve the amenity and beauty of the Gardens. What will happen to all those bird sanctuaries when the bulldozers move in? There will be no regeneration then?
Now unlike Donald Trump who is going to take away his Driver and golf balls if he does not get his own way; It is up to the members of the Planning Committee to make this decision. The news that the Scottish Arts Council Lottery and Scottish Enterprise are prepared to back the idea financially means the decision lays 100% in your hands.
I would like to leave you with a quote from our good friend Donald Trump
‘Deals are my art form. Other people paint beautifully on canvas or write wonderful poetry. I like making deals, preferably big deals. That’s how I get my kicks.’
The Planning Committee please make this your big deal and for the rest of your life when you see what you have created it will always give you a kick.
